The sweet spread is made from apples or pears or often a mixture of both fruits. Apple or pear cabbage is characterized by a very high fruit content and has a jelly-like, spreadable consistency and an even dark brown colour. Especially in the Rhineland, the sweet spread is a real specialty.

Origin

Even the Germans processed their fallen fruit into apple cabbage in wide pots. In this way, the fruit that could not be stored for a long time was preserved in no time. Due to the higher sugar content, pears were often added to the apple herb to further increase the shelf life. In addition, the sweet herb was an ideal sweetener before the invention of industrial sugar production in the 18th century.

Apple and pear cabbage are available all year round with consistent quality.

Taste

The spread has a jelly-like, spreadable consistency, is very sweet and tastes wonderfully fruity like apples and pears.

Use

Apple and pear cabbage tastes delicious on bread and rolls or with pancakes, crepes and potato pancakes. But apple or pear cabbage also give hearty sauces that certain something – this fine fruity note goes particularly well with meat dishes.

Storage

After opening, apple and pear cabbage should be stored in the refrigerator if possible.

Durability

If the jar has not yet been opened, apple and pear herb can be stored for several years without any problems. When stored and used properly, the sweet spread usually has a shelf life of at least 6 months after opening.

Only enjoy apple and pear cabbage in moderation – the sweet spread is very sugary and provides per 100 g: 221 kcal or 923 kilojoules, around 1.3 g protein, around 0.4 g fat and 52 g carbohydrates.
