8 Foods That Lower Blood Sugar Levels

For people with diabetes, controlling blood sugar is vital. Certain foods can temporarily lower blood sugar levels and make you feel better. But it’s important to remember that diet should only be a complement to treatment, not a replacement for it.


Onions, both fresh and cooked, are good for lowering blood sugar. Onions are rich in allicin, a substance that fights excess blood glucose.


Avocados contain healthy monounsaturated fats and are known for their low glycemic index. This product is good at regulating blood sugar levels and protecting against metabolic syndrome.


Fish and seafood contain omega-3 acids that stimulate the production of the hormone adiponectin. This hormone increases cellular sensitivity to insulin. For better glucose regulation, it is recommended to eat any marine and oily fish.


Studies have linked frequent consumption of berries to improved blood glucose levels. Cherries, raspberries, and blackberries are especially beneficial. These berries increase cellular sensitivity to insulin and improve glucose metabolism.


Nuts contain important vitamins and fiber to control blood sugar levels and have a low glycemic index. Eating them after a meal will keep you from having sugar spikes. Almonds, peanuts, and hazelnuts are especially useful.

It is important to remember that the daily rate of nuts in diabetes is no more than 40 grams. It should not be exceeded.

Whole grain products

Whole grain products are the best sources of carbohydrates for diabetics. They take a long time to digest and help control blood sugar levels. Eating whole oat products is recommended to lower glucose levels. And a spoonful of the bran before dinner reduces the risk of a sugar spike.

Pumpkin and pumpkin seeds

The harms and benefits of pumpkin are well known, but this root vegetable is also useful for controlling sugar levels. In some countries, pumpkin is used as a traditional food supplement for diabetes. Pumpkin seeds also reduce glucose levels significantly.


Eggs are very good for people with diabetes – they are high in protein, healthy fats, and minerals. Studies show that eating one boiled egg significantly lowers blood sugar levels.
