Adding Soda to Wine: a Simple Trick That Everyone Should Know About

Sometimes, when choosing a wine of an unfamiliar brand, you can’t always guess how it will taste – is it too sour? And if you end up disappointed by the drink, it is a good idea to know how to remove acidity from wine.

Do not give up on the drink, because such a simple technique as adding baking soda to the wine is quite capable of saving the situation.

What to do if the wine is sour

Not everyone knows that ordinary baking soda can significantly reduce the acidity of the wine.

According to experts, many wine producers have long used this trick. When the drink turns out very sour, they add a small amount of baking soda to it – just a quarter teaspoon per liter of wine.

Do not overdo it, because more baking soda can permanently ruin the taste of the drink.

Why add baking soda to wine

If you are interested in how to distinguish real wine from fake, then baking soda can also help you. Not only is it able to neutralize the acidity of the wine, but it is often used to test its quality.

For the experiment, pour a small amount of wine into a clean glass and add a teaspoon of baking soda to it. In case the drink did not change its color, it is fake. Natural wine turns blue when soda is added.
