Alternatives: How To Replace Butter in Baked Goods and Other Dishes

“You can’t spoil porridge with butter,” is the saying every Ukrainian knows. In fact, butter is a lifesaver that can be used to improve any dish. But what to do if during cooking you find that there is no butter in the fridge?

What you can replace butter in the dough – options

As a rule, recipes for this or that baking are written for a reason – the cook understands what products and in what amounts are needed to get the desired taste and consistency of the dessert. If you decide to deviate from the technology, try replacing the butter:

  • Margarine – most similar to butter, substitute in the proportion of 1:1;
  • vegetable oil – you can also use olive oil, coconut oil, corn oil, or other in the proportion 10:8 (for 100 g of butter – 80 g of substitute);
  • yogurt or sour cream – use half as much butter as you would if you had it;
  • Bananas – you can take them for sweet baked goods, but you should be careful with the sugar and put half as many bananas as the butter.

Also as a substitute for butter, you can use apple or pumpkin puree. Keep in mind that the product must be natural, and put it in half as much as the butter.

How to replace butter in mashed potatoes and pasta

Mashed potatoes made with the addition of butter turn out tender and airy. If the product is not available, you can try adding milk, cream, or sour cream to the potatoes. Pour the product gradually, adjusting the consistency of the mashed potatoes. You can also use eggs, but not completely, but only the yolk – for 500 grams of potatoes is enough 1 pc.

To improve the taste of the pasta, take a little margarine or sunflower oil. Alternatively, you can use any other oil, for example, olive oil – just don’t go overboard.

How to replace butter in buckwheat and other porridges

Here the story is the same as with mashed potatoes – as a substitute for butter, olive or sunflower oil is suitable. Pour it a little, otherwise, the slight bitterness of the product will turn into a catastrophic mistake. If you cooked sweet porridge, you can season it with cream – the product should be as fatty as possible.

What to replace butter in sandwiches – tips

If you want to make a delicious sandwich, but you can’t find butter in the fridge, you can easily replace it with cream cheese or soft cottage cheese – both products have a delicate and pleasant texture, in addition, in many ways much healthier. Hummus would also be a good alternative – this oriental snack would go well with any sandwich ingredients. If your sandwich is sweet, you don’t need to put butter on it at all – it’s better to choose nut paste or honey.
