Benefits and Harms of Sweet Peppers: Why You Should Eat Them More Often and How to Store Them

The benefits and harms of bell peppers are well known to scientists. In August, owners of land plots harvest juicy bell peppers. Despite its name, bell peppers have nothing to do with Bulgaria, but came to us from South America. This vegetable is not only the basis for delicious dishes, such as stuffed peppers with stuffing but also a rich source of vitamins.

Bell peppers as a source of vitamins

Sweet peppers contain a huge amount of nutrients and vitamins, such as beta-carotene, riboflavin, folic acid, and ascorbic acid. Many vitamins in the vegetable are destroyed by heat treatment, so it is better to eat peppers raw.

The vitamin composition in peppers of different colors is different. Green vegetables are rich in chlorogenic acid, which is good for blood vessels. Red peppers have more vitamins C and A than lemons and blackcurrants. And the yellow fruit has a lot of potassium, which is good for the heart and nervous system, and beta-carotene, which is necessary for visual acuity.

The folic acid in peppers is extremely useful for the female reproductive system. Peppers are very useful for pregnant women because it prevents the loss of nails, teeth, and hair during this period. This vegetable rejuvenates the skin and reduces the risk of breast cancer.

If you eat bell peppers more often, your cardiovascular system will become healthier. This vegetable lowers the content of harmful cholesterol in the blood, prevents the formation of blood clots, and improves blood quality.

Harms and contraindications to the use of sweet peppers

Sweet peppers can be eaten every day – they will not harm a healthy person. But with some diseases, this vegetable is contraindicated. It is not recommended to eat peppers for arrhythmia, gastritis, ulcers, chronic kidney and liver diseases, and angina.

Hypotensive people should use it with caution because this product lowers blood pressure. Lovers of raw peppers should wash the vegetable carefully because its skin can be treated for long storage.

How to store bell peppers

Bell peppers spoil quickly and “infect” other vegetables. Therefore, it is better to store peppers in separate paper bags or in napkins. At room temperature, the vegetable quickly becomes soft and dry. It should be stored in the refrigerator in the vegetable compartment. Peppers tolerate freezing well, so they can be sliced and stored in the freezer.
