How to Cook Barley: 3 Cooking Methods

Pearl porridge is very useful, but we do not cook it so often – it takes too long to boil. Is it possible to speed up this process, how much water takes, and how long to boil the pearl millet to make it crumbly?

How to cook barley – how much water to take

Pearl porridge can be cooked in a pot or multicooker, or you can cook it in the microwave. To do this, you need to prepare the pearl barley and take the right proportion of water for it:

  1. Peel the grits, if there is debris – remove it.
  2. Rinse the groats under running water, or in a bowl, changing the water several times – it should become clear.
  3. Fill the groats with cold water:
  • if you cook porridge in a pot or multicooker, the ratio of groats and water is 1:3 (for example, 1 cup of groats and 3 cups of water);
  • if you cook pearl barley in the microwave, the ratio of groats and water is 1:1,5-2.

Salt the pearl barley can be done at the beginning as well as in the middle of cooking.

How to cook pearl barley quickly – a simple tiphack

To cook the pearl barley porridge faster, you need to soak the groats beforehand. To do this, fill the groats with water – its level should be above the grits for a few centimeters. Leave the grits for 2-3 hours or overnight. Before cooking, drain the water, and rinse the grits again.

Soaked grits boiled better and taste better.

How much to cook barley in a pot, multi-cooker, and microwave

  • In a pot

Put the groats with water on high heat, and bring to a boil. Then turn it down and simmer over gentle heat with a lid.

Soaked groats should boil for 40 minutes, without soaking – for 1 hour.

If the water boils during cooking, you need to add a little boiling water.

  • In a multicooker

Boil barley groats with water in the mode “Porridge”, “Rice” or “Buckwheat”.

Soaked groats need to cook for 1 hour, without soaking – about 1.5 hours.

  • In the microwave

Boil the pearl millet in a dish suitable for the microwave. The groats should be poured with boiling water and cooked at full microwave power.

Soaked groats should be cooked for 20 minutes, unsoaked – for 30-40 minutes.

While cooking, stir the porridge, and if necessary – add boiling water.
