How to Get Rid of Unpleasant Cat Litter: 4 Important Steps

Cat owners often encounter the problem of cats “walking” in the wrong place. They can do their business by the litter box or directly on the couch. In this case, you need to act quickly and follow the rules.

How to get rid of cat urine smell with folk remedies – tips

The first and most important rule – if you notice that the pet “went” past the litter box, you need to clean up immediately. The longer cat urine is left on the interior, the more it is absorbed into the and the stronger the smell.

Moreover, you will not see the dried stain, but the unpleasant smell will remain. And this fact will provoke the cat to experiment with your nervous system again.

That is why it is important to act quickly and follow the correct sequence of actions.

Clean up the puddle at once

First, you need to wipe the puddle dry with a rag or paper towel. If the cat has damaged the carpet, press on the stain several times with a rag – this way you will be able to absorb the liquid faster. Never rub or smear the stain. If it’s already dried, spritz it with water and then press.

Apply detergent to the stain

You can buy special furniture cleaners (available at pet stores) or use ordinary detergents.

IMPORTANT: such cleaners should contain enzymes that quickly eliminate cat enzymes from urine and odors.

Apply the detergent to the stain and leave it to dry, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Most likely, this will be enough to get rid of the unpleasant odor.

Use baking soda, peroxide, or vinegar

The above products are great if you don’t have any enzyme products on hand. Mix 1.5 cups of water and 1.5 cups of vinegar and then pour the solution over the stain. After 3-5 minutes, blot it with paper towels or a cloth, then sprinkle it with baking soda.

After that, dilute 1 tsp of dish detergent in 100 ml of peroxide. Apply the mixture over the baking soda and scrub thoroughly with a brush. All you have to do is wait a few hours for the mixture to dry. When it does, vacuum the carpet and you’re done.

Try to find manganese

An alternative remedy for dealing with cat urine stains and odors that is, alas, not easy to buy at the drugstore. If you manage to get hold of manganese, make a weak solution and sprinkle it on the stain. The main thing is to make sure that the crystals dissolve, otherwise, you will have to find out later how to wash the manganese solution from the carpet.

IMPORTANT: under no circumstances use ammonia or chlorine – these products contain ammonia. Firstly, they can ruin your things, and secondly, if the cat smells the ammonia, it will definitely “go” to the wrong place again.
