White linens are very beautiful but impractical. The slightest stain is visible on such bedding, and it washes out very quickly, taking on an extremely unpleasant gray or yellow hue.
Unfortunately, it is very difficult to get rid of this scourge, and you have to constantly buy expensive laundry products or new sets of linens. But there are proven methods of whitening laundry, which were used by our grandmothers.
How to whiten linens – a universal way
This method is universal because it is suitable for almost any cotton linens, except those that have a rich or acidic hue. In the case of linens with bright colors, you will have to buy special products with color-preserving technology, otherwise, you risk ruining the original appearance of the bed.
You will need:
- 5 liters of warm water;
- 5-6 tbsp of baking soda;
- 2 tbsp. ammonia.
Dilute baking soda in water and add ammonia. Soak the linen in the solution for about two hours, but you can leave it for a longer time. After soaking, the laundry should be rinsed very well.
How to whiten yellowed white linens – a penny method
This method is only suitable for white cotton linens because it requires boiling:
- Step 1. In a large pot or metal basin, place the laundry that has turned yellow.
- Step 2. Fill with water so that it completely covers the laundry, and add detergent – we used to use shavings of ordinary laundry soap.
- Step 3: Place on the stove and boil for 40 minutes to an hour.
The result after such treatment will not be long in coming. By the way, some housewives boil laundry with ammonia. In this case, the room must be very well-ventilated – we do not recommend doing this at home.
How to whiten laundry with baking soda in the washing machine – a method for the lazy
If there is no desire to bother with soaking and boiling linens, you can simplify the process. To do this, you will need half a cup of ordinary baking soda and as much of your favorite bleach.
This is all together with the bedding load into the drum of the washing machine and running the usual program. After completing the program, it is recommended to run a second rinse.
How to bring back the color of bed linen – an effective way
This option can only be applied to bed linen with a persistent dye, otherwise, the color of the fabric can change not for the better.
It is necessary to dilute a bottle of ammonia alcohol in 3 liters of water and soak the linen in the resulting solution for an hour. The main thing is to rinse the laundry well after treatment.
For bed linen that sheds, it is necessary to pre-soak with vinegar before the first wash. A teaspoon of ordinary 9% vinegar is enough per liter of water. And in this case, do not use any aggressive washing agents, otherwise, the color will wash out very quickly.
