What Foods Should Not Be Stored With Each Other: How to Keep Order in the Fridge

If you want to properly put in order in the refrigerator, you need to know what foods should not be kept around. It is worth noting that some fruits and vegetables in general are better to send to a dry, dark room.

Improper proximity can lead to the fact that some products will be unusable.

Can all fruits be stored together?

You shouldn’t intuitively pair different foods, as the coolness of the refrigerator will be ideal for some, while others just need to be in the same temperature that is comfortable for humans.

Outside the refrigerator, you should keep apricots, avocados, pineapples, bananas, pears, melons, potatoes, kiwis, onions, peaches, citrus fruits, and garlic, among others.

Find a separate place in the refrigerator for bananas if you do decide to put them there. Bananas can secrete ethylene (a plant hormone) that helps the fruit ripen, so their “neighbors” can begin to spoil quickly.

In addition to bananas, pears, apricots, apples, and potatoes release ethylene. Do not store cucumbers near fruits that produce ethylene. It is believed that if you put a ripe apple next to unripe tomatoes, they will ripen much faster.

Oranges and apples have no place next to each other in the refrigerator. Apples don’t need good ventilation, but oranges are different.

Do not stack pears, apples, and pumpkins together. Pumpkins can keep for a long time, even when they have not been turned over for a long time, but apples and pears can soon begin to go moldy.

Avocados should not be placed near foods that emit ethylene. Also, the worst neighbor for avocados is pineapple. Avocados can be harmed by the smell of pineapple.

Do not store figs, grapes, mushrooms, rhubarb, and corn along with green onions. Refuse to store potatoes with onions, as the aromatic substances contained in onions can cause potatoes to spoil.

Storing beets, carrots, and onions together can be disastrous – they will spoil quickly. Carrots and beets are best stored in separate paper bags and onions in a drawer. Keep herbs that can be used as spices, such as dill, parsley, and basil, separate from all foods.
