Where to Store Carrots in the Apartment: 4 Convenient Options for Preserving the Product in Winter

What’s the best way to store carrots – the best options

It is believed that the cellar and basement – are the most optimal places for storing vegetables in winter, as they will be able to create favorable conditions for carrots. If you provide the right level of temperature and humidity, the crop will be able to keep until the next season.

How to save carrots for the winter in a box

Take a wooden or plastic box and fill it with about 2 cm of sand. If it is not available, you can take sawdust, onion husks, or moss. The main rule is that the filler must be dry and clean. Distribute the carrots at the same distance, not piling them in a pile, but carefully laying them out in front of each other. In this way, lay out the layers, on top of the filler.

How to properly store carrots in bags for the winter

Some hostesses use this method – it is considered the least energy-consuming and most convenient. To help carrots survive the winter, put carrots in clean plastic bags, throw pine sawdust inside, let the air out, and tie the bag.

We understand that not everyone has the opportunity to get carrots down under, so we’ll tell you how to preserve carrots for the winter without a cellar.

How long do carrots keep in the refrigerator and is it worth leaving them there

A big white friend who is known in trouble, usually at night – a real “wand-extractor” for many hostesses. To keep carrots in the refrigerator, wash them thoroughly or rub them with a sponge, getting rid of the dirt. Then lay them out on a towel and pat them dry. When carrots are dry, cut off the tips on both sides and wait until they are dry too.

Place the vegetables in a plastic bag or vacuum bag, let the air out, and tie them tightly. Store it in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator and don’t be alarmed if condensation forms at first – it will disappear later.

How to store carrots fresh – the freezing method

This method is also suitable if you know for sure that you do not want to chew whole carrots. Rinse the carrots and pat them dry. Then rub them on a coarse grater. Alternatively, the vegetables can be sliced into strips, circles, or however you prefer. Place them in bags or plastic containers and put them in the freezer.

Why carrots don’t keep well – shelf life

As with anything, there is no “magic pill” that will help vegetables live forever. We are all perishable, and carrots are no exception, so it’s important to consider the average lifespan of vegetables. Of course, depending on how they are stored:

  • 1 year – in onion husks, pine sawdust, or boxes of sand;
  • 5-8 months – in closed dry boxes without filler.
  • 2-4 months – in plastic bags.
  • 1-2 months – in a city apartment in the refrigerator.

In the freezer, of course, carrots will be stored longer – about a year, if you have prepared them correctly.
