Cowboy Beans

The perfect cowboy beans recipe with a picture and simple step-by-step instructions.

  • 4 Can Kidney beans (alternatively white beans or quail beans)
  • 400 g Minced meat
  • 200 g Bacon
  • 1 Pc. Onion
  • 150 ml Ketchup
  • 150 ml Bbq sauce
  • 4 tbsp Sugar brown
  1. This ground beef bean stew is typical of southern American cuisine. Classic cowboy beans are prepared in the Dutch Oven, a heavy cast iron pot. It is suitable for stove and oven and can even be hung over an open fire. Cowboy beans can be prepared for any occasion, they are also ideal as a side dish for barbecues. That is why they are also called BBQ beans or barbecue beans. They differ from baked beans in the added meat and the smoky note that the BBQ sauce gives them – typical southern style.

This is how it’s done:

  1. Fry the bacon until crispy, allow to cool and crumble
  2. Fry the minced meat. When it starts to crumble, add the onions and cook until translucent.
  3. Add the beans and the remaining ingredients and stir in.
  4. Now let the cowboy beans simmer for 40 minutes, either from the stove or covered in the oven at 180 degrees. Or, just like in the southern states, on the fire with low heat – stir occasionally here so that nothing begins to stick.
