The term meat poisoning describes so-called botulism, a very rare but life-threatening food poisoning with the so-called botulism toxin. This is a metabolite of bacteria of the genus Clostridium; The toxin is mainly produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This bacterium typically thrives in canned food because it needs an oxygen-free environment. However, the food does not necessarily have to be meat.

The symptoms usually start between several hours and up to three days after consumption – in individual cases, it takes up to eight days for the first symptoms to appear.

A doctor’s visit is urgently recommended if there are signs of botulism, severe or bloody diarrhea, pregnant women, infants and small children, the elderly, and people with a weakened immune system.
