How to Eat Right for the Elderly – Nutritionist’s Explanation

Bilousova says that the special diet for the elderly is due to the fact that age-related changes have a noticeable effect on the gastrointestinal tract.

Older people should definitely include more plant-based foods in their diet. This was stated by a well-known expert nutritionist Anna Belousova.

“It is absolutely necessary to diversify your diet. You need to have everything in balance: fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. You also need a lot of vegetable fiber. This is very important. When a person is elderly, he or she is at increased risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, and vegetable fiber saves us from this,” she said.

Belousova says that this state of affairs is due to the fact that age-related changes also affect the gastrointestinal tract.

The nutritionist also noted that overeating is not worth it, as well as saving fatty foods and flour for dinner. Dinner for people of age should be light, added Belousova. Steamed fish and stewed vegetables are best.

“People over 60 should switch to an almost vegetarian diet. When we eat eggs, fish, dairy, and vegetable products. This is a five- to six-hour meal that does not strain the gastrointestinal tract and does not overfill the stomach. You can eat small portions, but in a varied way and throughout the day,” the nutritionist summarized.
