How to Freeze and Thaw Meat: Secrets and Tips

How to freeze meat properly

You should not put meat in the freezer in one big piece. It will freeze long and unevenly, and then take a very long time to thaw. The meat before freezing should be washed and put in the refrigerator for an hour. Next, you need to cut off the skin, fat, gristle, etc. Cut the meat into wide, flat pieces – they freeze easily and defrost quickly.

Do not store meat in the freezer in plastic bags. It freezes the product. It is better to put the pieces in a tray or plastic bag with a clasp. Meat can be cut into portions of desired shape and size, depending on what dish you plan to cook with it.

Ground meat can also be frozen: it is placed in a bag and pressed with a rolling pin so that it is flat. Use a skewer or the blunt side of a knife to draw lines in the shape of squares on the workpiece. In this way, you can break off a piece of minced meat for cooking, without defrosting the whole billet

How to defrost meat

The best way to defrost meat is in the refrigerator. Transfer it to a plate or pot and put it in the refrigerator for 12 to 15 hours. This way it defrosts evenly and does not spoil.

The second way to defrost meat is in cold water. Transfer the meat in the package to a saucepan and pour cold water over it. This will take about 2-5 hours to defrost, depending on the size of the pieces.

Defrost meat in the microwave only in extreme cases when you need to cook it urgently. On the microwave, select the “defrost” mode. Cook the meat in this mode for 10-15 minutes, turning occasionally.
