Is Salt Unhealthy or Not?

You should consume salt in moderation

First of all, salt is important for the body. This cannot do without salt and is responsible for the fluid and nutrient balance, among other things. Iodised salt in particular is recommended because iodine is essential for hormone production in the thyroid gland. Nevertheless, there are limitations:

  • Salt, especially in large amounts, can be harmful if you are ill. Salts are not beneficial, especially in the case of kidney disease, but also in the case of high blood pressure or liver cirrhosis. People who suffer from this often have to follow a strict diet that is low in salt.
  • Science has not yet been able to clarify how harmful salt is for healthy people. There are studies that classify it as slightly harmful, others see it as unhealthy.
  • If you want to eat right, you should make sure that you consume around five to six grams of salt every day. You can’t go wrong with this value.

What’s the problem with salt?

Salts are considered unhealthy mainly because they are contained almost everywhere. Almost every food has salt, which is probably why you are consuming way too much salt.

  • The hidden salts lurk everywhere and are often ingested unconsciously. If you then add salt, you can quickly ingest too much salt. According to some studies, however, this is precisely what is unhealthy.
  • Many salts are found in sausage and meat products in particular, but also in preserves, dairy products, and baked goods.
  • In addition, many glasses of water contain sodium, i.e. salts. If you want to eat healthily, you should ensure that the sodium content is low (less than 20 mg sodium per liter). This is because we consume enough salt in the food we eat and usually do not need any additional salt in the water.
