Planting Onions in Spring: All the Nuances and the Best Dates

When to plant onions in April 2023

Onions can be planted on days when the average daily temperature reaches 10° above zero. In 2023, this weather will be around mid to late April. Do not delay planting, because young bulbs do not like the soil too warm.

This culture is considered fairly resistant to frost. Onions can also be planted earlier, at the beginning of April. In this case, the bulbs will need to be covered with a film overnight.

How to plant onions in the open ground

Onions are grown for 2 years: first, seeds are sown and in the first year harvested seeding – small bulbs – then planted seeds in the second year. Ready-seeded onions can be bought at the market or in a store.

Seeded onions before planting should be soaked in a salt solution (4 tbsp of salt per 10 liters of water). Onions are left in such a liquid for 4 hours. This promotes faster germination of the plant.

Before planting, the soil should be turned over and fertilized with humus or compost. Then you need to draw furrows about 8 cm deep. Bulbs are planted in the ground with fist-sized gaps and lightly covered with soil.

Onions germinate well in the ground after corn, beets, tomatoes, grain crops, cucumbers, and beans. It is not recommended to plant the culture in the same place where it grew last year.

When to plant onions according to the lunar calendar

The following dates are considered fruitful days for planting onions in the ground according to the lunar calendar:
