Substitute for Sambal Oelek: recreate the contents of the condiment

Instead of looking for completely different substitutes, you can simply make the sauce yourself, because sambal oelek is quick to make.

  • All you need is 250g chilies, preferably red for the right color and heat, some oil, lemon juice, brown sugar, and white wine vinegar.
  • To round it all off, just add a little salt to taste.
  • For the sauce, the freshest possible chilies, including the seeds but without the stalks, must first be chopped up. The majority of the crushed chilies go into the saucepan with 100 milliliters of water, where everything is boiled for about 8 minutes. A few pods (about 4-6) remain on the cutting board.
  • Then the chilies are drained and chopped together with the other ingredients in a food processor until a paste-like mass is formed.
  • Now season your homemade sambal oelek with salt and taste everything again with the other ingredients. After the sauce has cooled in a jar, it can be used.

 

Other ingredients for the spicy paste

If you want to do without the ingredients mentioned above as much as possible or save yourself the work, you can use the following:

  • Sriracha sauce has almost the same ingredients as sambal oelek and can be found in almost every supermarket.
  • On the other hand, Ajvar has some other flavor carriers than Sambal Oelek, but in principle, the pastes are quite similar. However, to achieve the same degree of spiciness, you should enrich Ajvar with chili peppers.
  • Tabasco should also be able to achieve a similar effect to the seasoning sauce. The sharpness can keep up with Sambal Oelek. For consistency, the combination with Ajvar is recommended again.
  • Harissa could also be a substitute for the paste, as the spice blend adds only cumin and garlic, along with the usual ingredients in sambal oelek.
