In addition to more than 70 trace elements, the Sango sea coral provides calcium and magnesium in particular – two basic minerals that have numerous positive properties for our health. They protect against cancer, diabetes, heart disease, the consequences of stress, and brittle bones. However, with the abundance of mineral supplements on the market, one often wonders which might be the best. The Sango sea coral is one of the front runners here: its minerals are natural, holistic, basic, and easily absorbable.
Sango sea coral: natural minerals for your calcium and magnesium supply
The Sango Sea Coral is native to Japan – and only around the island of Okinawa. As early as the 1950s, the Japanese Nobuo Someya noticed that the inhabitants of Okinawa were exceptionally healthy and that many of them apparently had no trouble living a hundred years or more.
Civilization diseases such as cardiovascular problems and cancer were virtually unknown in Okinawa. Some investigated the matter and found that an important difference from other regions of Japan was Okinawa’s distinctive water. Experts analyzed the water and realized that it was the Sango Sea Coral that made the Okinawan water so pure and delicious while providing it with such a balanced supply of minerals and trace elements.
Okinawa itself is located on a former coral reef of the Sango sea coral. The rain flows through the petrified reef, absorbing the valuable now ionized minerals and trace elements of the Sango sea coral, is filtered and cleaned by the coral at the same time, and then fills the drinking water wells of the population. In addition, the powdered coral is still valued as a naturopathic remedy in Okinawa.
Okinawa Long-Term Study: Why Do Okinawa People Live So Old?
The Okinawa Centenarian Study investigated why people in Okinawa live to be a hundred years and older more often than in other regions of the world and also more often than in the rest of Japan, while still being able to manage their daily lives independently in a third of all cases.
The study began in 1975 with participants aged 99 and over at the time. Coral water could be an important part of the longevity secret of Okinawans – along with other factors such as B. the special diet, which differs significantly from the diet in the rest of Japan.
For example, it was discovered that around the 1950s, Okinawa people ate little polished rice and plenty of sweet potatoes. They got 70 percent of their daily calories from sweet potatoes. In the rest of Japan, sweet potatoes accounted for just 3 percent of daily calories. There, the two main sources of calories were polished rice (54 percent of daily calories) and wheat products (24 percent).
In Okinawa, on the other hand, wheat and rice accounted for only 7 and 12 percent of calories, respectively. They also ate more soy products here than in the rest of Japan. Meat, eggs, and dairy products were not eaten in relevant amounts either in Okinawa or in the rest of Japan, at most some fish (15 g daily in Okinawa, 62 g daily in the rest of Japan).
What centenarians – whether in Okinawa or Japan – have in common is their overall very low daily calorie intake of only 1100 kcal, which is probably also due to the fact that almost no sweets and hardly any oils and fats are used. Other factors that contribute to longevity are regular meditation, no stress, a safe social network, and rather than a gym, tai chi, and martial arts.
Sango coral provides calcium and magnesium
The Sango sea coral is a very good source of calcium and magnesium in particular, so a small daily dose of 2.4 grams of the powder provides 576 mg of calcium and 266 mg of magnesium. This already corresponds to more than half of the daily calcium requirement (1000 mg) and at the same time almost the entire daily magnesium requirement (300 – 350 mg), so the powder is an ideal dietary supplement for these two minerals.
Natural calcium in the Sango coral
The Sango sea coral consists to a large extent of natural calcium. When you think of calcium, you immediately think of strong bones and healthy teeth. In fact, most of the body’s calcium is stored right here and ensures stability. But the bones are also our calcium reservoir. When blood calcium levels drop, the body releases calcium from the bones and sends it into the blood. Because the blood calcium level must always remain the same. Otherwise, this would be life-threatening and lead to severe cramps (tetany).
The blood now supplies all other organs and tissues with calcium, because calcium has many other functions, as you can read in the calcium link above, e.g. B. for well-functioning muscles and a healthy nervous system. Calcium is also involved in blood clotting and the proper functioning of many enzymes.
So that there is always enough calcium for all these tasks and the bones and teeth do not have to give up more calcium than they can spare, a good calcium supply with ideally natural calcium is an important prerequisite. If there is also hyperacidity, calcium is always eliminated with the urine, which can reduce the calcium content of bones and teeth over time.
Calcium in hyperacidity
From the point of view of naturopathy, chronic hyperacidity is the result of modern lifestyle and nutrition. Acid-forming foods such as meat, sausage, cheese, baked goods, and pasta, as well as sweets, soft drinks, and many convenience products are often consumed in excess. At the same time, there is usually a lack of compensation in the form of alkaline vegetables, alkaline salads, sprouts, and fruits. If then only a little water is drunk and every movement is avoided, then the body’s own buffer systems can quickly be overloaded and the resulting over-acidification can lead to a wide variety of problems, e.g. a lack of calcium and other minerals.
The Sango sea coral can therefore be taken preventively or for deacidification, if there is already acidification, it can supply the organism with calcium and magnesium – two strongly basic minerals – and thus protect bones and teeth. At the same time, there are now enough minerals for the skin, hair, nails, and connective tissue, because these body structures also always need sufficient calcium and magnesium.
Why not just drink milk?
At this point, you may be wondering what the point of a calcium supplement is when one could easily drink milk or eat cheese or yogurt to get plenty of calcium. Dairy products are actually rich in calcium.
But what uses is milk calcium if you also suffer from a magnesium deficiency? Magnesium is only very sparsely present in dairy products. With the conventional diet containing milk (especially if cheese is eaten, which contains a lot of calcium), one is usually well supplied with calcium. At the same time, the conventional diet often contains only a few sources of magnesium (whole grains, nuts, seeds, vegetables), so on the one hand a magnesium deficiency and on the other hand, a calcium surplus can occur.
At the same time, dairy products are not well tolerated by many people. In addition to lactose intolerance, which is rather rare in our part of the world (Europe), milk protein intolerance is more common. In contrast to lactose intolerance, this does not manifest itself in clear digestive problems after milk consumption, but can also “only” promote chronic diseases of all kinds and lead to latent headaches, tiredness, and frequent respiratory infections. Dairy products also increase the risk of prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women (especially cheese).
Dairy products are therefore not always suitable for keeping the personal mineral balance a healthy balance. Better are vegetable calcium sources, which usually also provide magnesium at the same time, and – as a supplement – the Sango sea coral.
Natural Magnesium in Sango Coral
The second mineral found in large amounts in Sango Sea Coral is magnesium, another vital element. Whether it’s migraines, chronic pain, high blood pressure, arthrosis, rheumatism, diabetes, or cholesterol problems, whether it’s about preventing heart attacks, strokes, osteoporosis or kidney stones or eliminating obesity, asthma, and infertility, magnesium is always there one of the most important components of holistic therapy.
Magnesium shows some remarkable mechanisms of action that can lead to an improvement in all of the complaints mentioned. For example, magnesium is fundamentally anti-inflammatory and is therefore indicated for all health problems associated with chronic inflammation, which are almost all of the diseases mentioned above.
In the case of insulin resistance (type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes), magnesium ensures that the cells develop a higher sensitivity to insulin so that diabetes can regress. Magnesium lowers blood pressure because it helps relax the muscles of the blood vessel walls – and thus reduces a significant risk factor in the development of heart attacks and strokes. Magnesium is THE anti-stress mineral, which you will notice particularly when you lack magnesium and suffer from insomnia, nervousness, headaches, and sweating.
Calcium and magnesium – an inseparable team
The two minerals – calcium and magnesium – are not only indispensable individually, but also inextricably linked, which means that calcium without magnesium does not work as well and vice versa. So it is not very useful to take only one or only the other mineral. On the contrary.
Many people only take a calcium supplement because they want to do something for their bones. What happens? If there is too much calcium in the body in relation to the amount of magnesium, this can lead to noticeable health impairments and aggravation of existing diseases. This can already be the case with a slight increase in the calcium level – if the magnesium level does not rise at the same time.
The Calcium Magnesium Experiment
Fancy an experiment? If you have a separate form of calcium supplement and magnesium supplement at home, add a small amount of the calcium supplement (1 tablet) to a glass with 30 ml of water. It will not dissolve completely. Then add the same amount (or slightly less) of magnesium.
What is happening? Suddenly, the calcium continues to dissolve. Even in a glass of water, magnesium has a clear influence on the reactivity of calcium. The water solubility of calcium increases in the presence of magnesium – which ultimately also increases the bioavailability of calcium. The teamwork between calcium and magnesium is very similar in the body, e.g. B. when it comes to protecting bone density during menopause.

Calcium alone is not of much use in osteoporosis. Only when magnesium comes into play (and of course vitamin D) can the bones strengthen again and increase in bone density. A study from 2012 on mice without ovaries showed how beneficial coral minerals are in this regard. It was found that coral calcium together with zeolite can stop the loss of bone density, which also progresses continuously in women during menopause.
Sango Sea Coral – The contained trace elements
The Sango sea coral not only provides calcium and magnesium. The Sango sea coral is a natural source of many essential minerals and trace elements, including iron, silicon, chromium, sulfur, and natural iodine. However, the amounts of these minerals contained in the Sango Sea Coral are generally too small to cover the demand. For example, if you have a significant iron or iodine deficiency, you should use dietary supplements that can specifically remedy these deficiencies.
The trace elements contained in the Sango sea coral could only help to meet daily needs, such as. B. the contained chromium or iodine.
Chrome in Sango Coral
Do you like eating fat? Or maybe you prefer sweet? Then your chrome level could be too low. Fatty food in particular means that chromium can only be absorbed insufficiently, and every reach into the candy aisle means that you excrete more chromium than you can spare. However, if there is a lack of chromium, then a corresponding deficiency promotes obesity. Because chromium otherwise helps to break down fat and build muscle.
Chromium can also have a positive effect on cholesterol and blood sugar levels since chromium can increase the insulin sensitivity of the cells, so blood sugar and insulin levels also drop. A proper insulin level then also causes blood lipid levels to drop.
For this reason, many holistic therapists now recommend optimizing the chromium supply in the case of diabetes and high blood lipid levels. With the usual daily dose of Sango sea coral (2.4 grams), you already cover 10 percent of your chrome requirements. If you also integrate legumes, fresh tomatoes, mushrooms, broccoli, and dried dates into your diet – all of which are chromium-rich foods – and at the same time avoid fatty foods and sugar-rich snacks, then you are perfectly supplied with chromium.
Iodine in Sango Coral
The daily iodine requirement of humans is between 150 and 300 micrograms – depending on the (ideal) weight of the respective person and their life situation (e.g. pregnancy, breastfeeding). Iodine is vital because the thyroid produces its hormones from this trace element. If there is a lack of thyroid hormones, one becomes phlegmatic, sleepy, depressed, suffers from loss of appetite, and yet continues to gain weight, although one hardly eats anything.
The right iodine supply is therefore more than important. The Sango Sea Coral can also help here. A daily dose of Sango contains 17 micrograms of natural iodine, so it gently supplements your diet with high-quality iodine.
If you also make sure to eat plenty of broccoli, green leafy vegetables, mushrooms, leeks, nuts, and a pinch of seaweed from time to time, then you no longer have to worry about your iodine supply (without fish).
The Sango sea coral is therefore a very diverse source of minerals. However, it is often not just the QUANTITIES of minerals contained in the respective mineral preparation that determine the quality of the preparation, but also its bioavailability, i.e. how well the respective minerals can be absorbed and used by the body. The Sango sea coral with the optimal 2:1 ratio
In some cases, conventional mineral supplements contain only calcium or only magnesium only iron, etc. In nature, however, we hardly ever find a single isolated mineral. And there is a good reason for that. Because the more different minerals and trace elements are combined with each other – of course in the natural ratio – the better they can be absorbed by the organism.
This is particularly important for the two main minerals in the Sango Sea Coral – calcium and magnesium. The human body only absorbs and utilizes calcium and magnesium ideally if they are present in a ratio of 2:1 (calcium: magnesium).
This is exactly the case in the Sango Sea Coral. It provides the two most important minerals calcium and magnesium not only in the ideal ratio of 2:1 for the human body but also in a natural combination with around 70 other minerals and trace elements and in a combination that is amazingly similar to that of the human body.
Note: Some dealers state that there is no natural Sango sea coral with a Ca: Mg ratio of 2:1. The Sango sea coral contains almost only calcium – and if a Sango preparation with a Ca: Mg ratio of 2: 1 is offered, then the magnesium is added. This is not correct and upon closer examination turned out to be a rumor that was probably circulated many years ago. In reality, there are two different varieties of Sango Coral. A coral powder that consists almost entirely of calcium and is therefore sold for about half the price of the other Sango preparations, as well as the coral powder that we are writing about here, which naturally has a, Ca: Mg ratio of 2:1. So no magnesium is added.
Sango sea coral resembles human bones
The Sango sea coral is so similar to the structure of our bones that it would (as described here be excellently suited as a bone substitute material. Dental implants – be they made of metal or ceramic – are always classified as foreign bodies by the organism, even if they do not trigger any obvious intolerance reactions It also becomes problematic with the realization of implants when the jawbone has already receded significantly.
The coral could solve all these problems. Due to its similarity to human bone, it is not considered a foreign substance by the body. Incompatibilities are excluded. In addition, the coral can replace the missing bone substance in the jawbone, which of course is not the case with implants.
Research on this topic has been going on for a long time. As early as the late 1980s, French scientists discovered in a study that bone implants made from coral are slowly resorbed by the body’s own bone tissue, while the coral is simultaneously replaced by new bone tissue over time. The scientists concluded that coral is an excellent biomaterial that acts as a scaffold in the body around which osteoblasts (bone cells) attach themselves, allowing new bone to form. Finnish researchers found something similar in 1996.
A few years later, the polyclinic for oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Charité University Hospital in Berlin began using coral as a bone replacement material in the skull area. The successes were published a few years later (1998) under the title “Natural coral calcium carbonate as an alternative substitute in bone defects of the skull” in a specialist journal for oral and maxillofacial surgery.
In addition to its variety of minerals and its naturally harmonious mineral ratio, this amazing similarity of coral with the human body or bones is another indication of how well coral is suitable as a dietary supplement for us humans. Unfortunately, we do not know if there are clinics/doctors who already work with coral implants.
How well are the minerals from the Sango coral absorbed?
A large part of the calcium and magnesium compounds is present in the undissolved Sango sea coral in the form of carbonates. However, the July 2009 issue of the Pharmazeutische Zeitung already explained that inorganic minerals (e.g. carbonates) are by no means resorbed to a lesser extent than organic minerals (e.g. citrates), but only more slowly.
However, according to their bioavailability, the Sango sea coral and its minerals apparently belong neither to one nor to the other group. They are surprisingly good and quickly bioavailable, so they get into the blood faster than conventional carbonates and from there into the body cells or to where they are needed – as a Japanese study in 1999 showed.
At the time, the researchers involved found that the minerals in sea coral are much better absorbed by the intestinal mucosa than conventional dietary supplements made from carbonate compounds. So the Sango Sea Coral seems to be something special and not comparable to conventional carbonates.
Calcium from the Sango coral: in the bloodstream in 20 minutes?
Reinhard Danne even writes in his book “Sango Meeres-Korallen” that the Sango sea coral or the calcium it contains reaches the bloodstream within 20 minutes – with a bioavailability of around 90 percent, which means that many other calcium supplements are not would clearly outperform since their availability is often only 20 – 40 percent.
However, we have no further evidence of this. But even with a slightly lower bioavailability, the Sango sea coral is a natural way to optimize your calcium and magnesium balance in a healthy way.
Are coral reefs being destroyed for the sango sea coral?
The Sango sea coral is therefore a highly recommended and high-quality mineral supplement. But aren’t coral reefs under threat these days? Due to shipping, environmental pollution, natural disasters, and rising water temperatures? So how could you eat the Sango sea coral with a clear conscience?
The Sango sea coral is not stolen from living coral reefs for the production of high-quality nutritional supplements. Instead, one collects – strictly controlled – only those coral fragments that have naturally detached themselves from the coral banks over time and that can now be found distributed on the seabed around Okinawa. However, if you would prefer to use another natural calcium supplement, you will find an alternative in the next section.
Is the Sango Sea Coral suitable for vegetarians and vegans?
Even if you are a vegetarian or vegan, Sango Sea Coral may be an option for you – although the coral itself is not a plant but an animal. The coral constantly deposits lime and in this way builds up huge coral reefs of enormous proportions over the centuries. However, the animals themselves are neither used nor exploited for the production of Sango sea coral powder, nor are their lifestyles disturbed. You only collect – as explained above – the naturally broken-off parts of the coral framework that the coral animals once formed. The Sango sea coral is therefore also suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
The alternative to the Sango sea coral: the calcium algae
Since most vegan people do not want to eat an animal even if it has died naturally, calcium algae are an alternative to the natural calcium supply. This is the red alga Lithothamnium calcareum.
You should then take additional magnesium or make your diet rich in magnesium.
Of course, this alternative is also a good idea for anyone concerned about coral reefs or possible radioactive contamination from Fukushima.
Sango Sea Coral and Fukushima
We are often asked whether one can take the coral at all with a clear conscience since it is “mined right next to Fukushima” and is therefore definitely radioactive. However, there is over 1,700 km between Fukushima and the coral collection areas. In addition, the current should flow in the opposite direction, i.e. from Okinawa to Fukushima, and not vice versa.
In addition, you can call up the radioactivity analysis of the current batches in the product information of responsible suppliers, which (at least from the effective nature brand) give no reason for complaint.
The benefits of Sango Sea Coral
Aside from the benefits of Sango Sea Coral described above and the fact that it is a natural product, compared to many other mineral supplements, coral has one distinct advantage:
Sango Coral is free from additives
It consists only of the powder of the Sango sea coral. It is therefore free of any kind of additives, fillers, flavors, release agents, stabilizers, sugar, acidity regulators, sweeteners, maltodextrin, antioxidants, and foam inhibitors. Because if you want to do something good for yourself, you should not burden yourself with potentially harmful substances at the same time.
Incidentally, the superfluous additives listed above can all be contained in a single mineral supplement, e.g. B. in the calcium-effervescent tablets from Sandoz. Therefore, keep your eyes open when buying mineral supplements or dietary supplements in general.
Sango coral is inexpensive
In addition, the Sango Sea Coral is very inexpensive. As is so often the case, the larger the package selected, the lower the price. For example, if you buy 100 g, this pack costs 9.95 euros (at Myfairtrade), but if you buy 1000 g, the 100 g price here is only 7.50 euros.
As a result, the Sango sea coral costs between just under 19 cents and 25 cents per day.
Sango Coral is available as a powder, capsules, and tablets
The Sango Sea Coral is available in the following three forms:
- In the form of a powder to be stirred in water and drunk
- in the form of capsules that can be easily swallowed and
- in the form of Sango Tabs that can be melted in the mouth or simply chewed.
Application of the Sango Sea Coral
Mix your daily dose of Sango powder with a dash of lemon juice in 0.5 – 1 liter of water in the morning and drink this amount of water throughout the day (always shake the bottle briefly before drinking). The lemon juice improves the bioavailability of the mineral compounds contained in the Sango sea coral.
If you take the Sango sea coral in several doses spread over the day (at least 2 to 3), then the body can absorb more calcium or magnesium than with just a single daily dose.
Of course, you can also simply swallow the capsules or take the tabs. However, always drink enough water.
Possible Side Effects of Sango Sea Coral
The Sango sea coral is – if you dose it properly – without side effects and disadvantages. Some manufacturers give the following usage recommendation: take one measuring spoon 3 times a day, dissolved in water 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.
However, if you do not tolerate taking the coral on an empty stomach, you can also take the powder with meals.
If you suffer from heartburn or excess stomach acid, you can take a Sango tab or drink the powder mixed with water, e.g. B. also immediately after a meal. Because the contained calcium carbonate neutralizes excess acids.
Do I need to take vitamin D with Sango Sea Coral?
It is often said that one must take vitamin D with a calcium supplement since vitamin D promotes the absorption of calcium from the intestine. An additional intake of vitamin D with the Sango sea coral only makes sense if you have a vitamin D deficiency. If you have healthy vitamin D levels and are also taking vitamin D with a calcium supplement, you are at risk for hypercalcemia, which means that too much calcium is then absorbed from the gut and floods the body. However, the risk of hypercalcemia is usually only present with very high daily calcium intake, e.g. B. if far more than 1000 mg are taken.
