Schäufele with Sauerkraut and Mashed Potatoes

The perfect schäufele with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes recipe with a picture and simple step-by-step instructions.

  • 500 g Sauerkraut drained fresh
  • 800 g Schäufele, or Kassler
  • 0,5 Fresh onion
  • 4 Pc. Bay leaves
  • 5 Pc. Juniper berries
  • Ground or whole caraway seeds, to taste
  • 1 liter Vegetable broth
  1. Put the sauerkraut with the spices in a large saucepan, place the meat on top and pour the vegetable stock on top. Let everything simmer over a medium heat for a good 90 minutes. If you don’t like it so soft, you can reduce the cooking time accordingly. Then cut the meat into slices or pieces, with the sauerkraut and mashed potatoes
  1. serve. You can also add some gravy. This dish doesn’t take a lot of work and tastes really delicious 🙂
