Ginger roots are very hardy and have a long shelf life if you store them properly. We give you a few tips for storing ginger bulbs.
Store ginger correctly – this is how it works
There are many ways to store ginger to preserve flavor and ensure long shelf life:
- The most important thing is to make sure that your ginger is fresh when you buy it. Fresh ginger is firm and plump rather than wrinkled, has a faint odor, and is not moist.
- It is best to leave the peel on and store your ginger roots in a cool and dark place. This keeps fresh ginger for many weeks.
- Cut off the parts of the ginger root as thinly as possible so that your ginger does not dry out over a large area.
- Another option is to store the ginger tightly in cling film or a freezer bag in the fridge. So you can store it for many months.
- It is best to freeze peeled ginger. It also lasts for many months.
- Alternatively, you can pickle ginger in alcohol or vinegar. It stays good for weeks, but the taste usually changes noticeably after pickling.
