Storing Chinese Cabbage: You Have to Pay Attention to This

Store Chinese cabbage in a cool place

Chinese cabbage is in season between September and February. It is best to store the vegetables either in the refrigerator or in the cellar.

  • Whichever method you choose, don’t wash the cabbage. Remove only damaged leaves and examine the outer leaf veins for slugs and similar pests. Collect the animals.
  • Then wrap the cabbage in cling film or a damp, clean tea towel.
  • The cabbage will keep for four weeks in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator.
  • If your cellar is dry and has a temperature between 3 degrees and 5 degrees Celsius, you can also store the cabbage there. Wrap the vegetables in the newspaper. It is best if you store the Chinese cabbage upright in a wooden box.
  • Check the head every 14 days and remove brown or wilted leaves.
  • Tip: If you don’t have enough space in the fridge or basement, you can freeze the Chinese cabbage.

Store the Chinese cabbage with the root

If you have Chinese cabbage in your own garden, harvest it with the roots.

  • Also remove damaged areas and vermin, such as snails.
  • Fill a box with damp sand and place the harvested cabbages upright and close together with the roots in the sand. The roots draw moisture from the sand. The cabbage will keep for at least three months.
  • Make sure the sand is always damp but not wet. It is best to check every week.
  • If you spot any brown spots or spots on the leaves, remove them immediately. Otherwise, your cabbage will spoil in no time.
