Storing raspberries: How to prepare the fruit

If you are not going to use your freshly picked raspberries right away, store them in the fridge. Raspberries from your own garden stay fresh for a few days in the fridge. On the other hand, raspberries from the supermarket are often only kept for a day. This is because the supermarket fruits are not really fresh, but have already been on the way to the fruit display for some time.

  • Fresh raspberries are firm, plump, have a strong, shiny color, and have a typical raspberry smell. First, you should sort out the bad raspberries. Remove any fruit that is bruised, very soft, or already mushy.
  • Raspberries with mold are also inedible. Discard rotten fruit, otherwise, the mold will spread to neighboring berries.
  • Raspberries quickly become mushy in water and lose their flavor. It is, therefore, best to only wash the fruit if you have to. You don’t necessarily have to wash raspberries that come from your own garden. For example, if there is soil on the berries, briefly spray the fruit under a gentle, thin jet of water.
  • If you washed the raspberries, let them dry before storing. To do this, place the berries on kitchen paper, for example. Kitchen towels are not suitable as a drying pad, as the red berries leave stains.

Store raspberries in a cool place: this is how it works

After you sort out the bad raspberries, you can store the remaining berries in the fridge.

  • Put the raspberries in an air-permeable container. Supermarket berries are often packaged in a cardboard tray. This is also good for storing in the fridge.
  • Place the raspberry bowl on a surface, such as a plate or glass bowl. This is how you protect your fridge from berry stains and leaking amniotic fluid. Prepared like this, you can put the raspberries in your fridge.
  • Tip: Even under the best conditions, raspberries will keep in the fridge for a few days at most. If you want to store the fruit long before you use it, it is best to freeze it.
