Stroke – what is it and why is it dangerous

A stroke is a sudden disruption of the cerebral circulation that provokes the death of nerve cells and irreversible damage. It can be caused by a blood clot that clogs a blood vessel – an ischemic stroke or hemorrhage due to a rupture of the vessel wall – a hemorrhagic stroke. This is a deadly condition, and any delay is unacceptable.

Stroke – causes

Several factors can provoke the development of a stroke, including

  • hypertension;
  • previous heart attack;
  • diabetes mellitus
  • head injuries;
  • aneurysm of cerebral vessels.

Factors that increase the risk of stroke include overweight and bad habits. All of the above diseases require increased attention and regular visits to the family doctor and specialists.

Prevention of stroke

  • Control blood pressure – in most cases, hypertension is the cause of stroke;
  • Monitor blood sugar and cholesterol levels;
  • Have your heart checked regularly;
  • Controlling weight and body mass index;
  • Moderate physical activity – walks in the fresh air and light exercises;
  • Quitting bad habits – stroke affects smokers twice as often.

The first signs of a stroke

To provide timely medical care, you need to clearly understand the first signs of a stroke. For self-diagnosis, be guided by these four symptoms:

  • A lowered corner of the mouth, a crooked smile;
  • A person cannot raise their arms at the same time;
  • Inability to quickly repeat a simple phrase, speech is slow, with stuttering;
  • The tip of the tongue deviates towards the stroke focus.
