In case of anemia, pay attention to iron intake
The most common cause of anemia is iron deficiency. The trace element plays a crucial role as a building block of blood cells. This form of the disease is easy to treat: A change in diet is usually sufficient, in which a lot of iron is supplied at the beginning to fill up the depots, and later care is taken to ensure that a deficiency no longer occurs. A large amount of the important trace element is found in pork liver and oysters, for example. Vegetarians and vegans can make do with legumes: lentils, peas, and kidney beans. Other plant sources of iron: are chanterelles and beetroot. Spinach, on the other hand, is relatively rich in iron but contains substances that hinder absorption. In the case of severe deficiency symptoms, concentrated preparations may have to be used. This also applies if the utilization of the trace element is disturbed. Then the body needs a very high dose (around 100 mg per day) to process the required amount.
Diet for anemia: The grapefruit works
If heavy metals inhibit iron absorption, they have to be flushed out of the body. This can be necessary, for example, when mercury is released from porous amalgam tooth fillings. Ingredients in grapefruit bind the harmful metals: the juice of just one fruit per day accelerates detoxification. The vitamin C it contains also promotes iron utilization. Therefore, grapefruits are generally recommended for an anemic diet. Caution is only required when taking medication, as the fruits can increase or decrease their effectiveness.
