What Is the Difference Between Coconut Milk and Coconut Water?

The coconut water is the clear liquid that is inside the fruit. Coconut milk, on the other hand, is made from the flesh of the fruit. The younger a coconut is, the more liquid it contains. Therefore, there are special drinking coconuts that are mainly used to obtain coconut water. For the production of coconut milk, the pulp is first grated and then pressed out directly. The coconut milk obtained in this way is particularly viscous. The remaining grated coconut can then be mixed with water and pressed again. The so-called second milk is thinner and contains significantly less fat.

The milky liquid from the coconut pulp is high in fat, while the clear liquid from the coconut is relatively low in calories and fat. While the milk is mainly used as an ingredient for curries, sauces and desserts, the water from the coconut is good to drink neat. It is rich in potassium and is comparable to mineral water in its calcium, magnesium and sodium content.
