Does a Hot Lemon With Honey Actually Help With a Cold?

Various studies have come to this conclusion, in which the effect of vitamin C on cold pathogens was examined. Accordingly, hot lemon does not help against a sore throat. At the same time, the studies were able to provide evidence that vitamin C can sometimes shorten the duration of colds, provided it is taken in sufficient quantities regularly and preventively. Adults should consume 100 milligrams of vitamin C daily. This recommended daily dose is about the consumption of two large lemons or oranges. It is, therefore, best to drink the hot lemon regularly, preferably in the morning. It shouldn’t be boiling hot. Only heat them to drinking temperature. This is recommended for all hot drinks on cold days.

Hot lemon: effects of vitamin C

In order to be able to exploit the positive properties of vitamin C, it is best not to heat the lemon juice at all or only slightly. Water that is too hot can destroy the heat-sensitive vitamin C. A hot lemon for a sore throat does not provide any immediate relief as it does for colds, but the drink still scores thanks to its beneficial effect. Vitamin C is involved in many important metabolic processes. Thanks to its antioxidant effect, it protects against cell damage and thus helps to keep our cells healthy. The secondary plant substances also contained in lemons, such as flavonoids, have the same effect. Because lemons provide several antioxidants at the same time, they can strengthen the immune system and thus indirectly help against colds together with healthy food.
