Milk is poison: that’s what it’s really about

In March 2018, YouTuber Unge uploaded a video titled “Milk is Poison”. The video has now been viewed more than 1.5 million times. The videos that react to Unge’s bold thesis have significantly more clicks.

  • Unge supports his thesis mainly with an action by the Canadian health authorities. This is currently revising the nutritional recommendations for its own citizens. Part of such recommendations is always the well-known food pyramids.
  • Various media had reported that Canada would like to completely remove milk from the food pyramid. However, this is not true, Canada only wants to adjust the recommendation. Previously, half a liter per day was recommended. Milk and dairy products are still recommended daily, but no longer explicitly half a liter.
  • From this circumstance, Unge concluded “milk is poison”. In addition, he speaks of the indoctrination by the milk lobby and of the fact that people are deliberately made sick with milk. In the next paragraph we will clarify what the thesis is really about.

Cows are poison: milk is not the problem

In general, milk is quite healthy. In addition to vitamins and proteins, it also contains some minerals. However, as with all fatty foods, there is a limit to what is healthy.

  • In a second video, Unge relativizes his statement and rows back from the milk lobby’s conspiracy theory. According to Unge, milk is no longer necessarily poison for the body, but rather poison for the environment. There is definitely something to it here too.
  • Millions of cows are needed worldwide to meet the high demand for meat and milk. Through their digestion, the cows cause a not inconsiderable amount of CO2 emissions and produce masses of liquid manure, which sometimes leads to over-fertilized soil in Germany. They consume a lot of water, which causes problems, especially in arid regions.
  • So the thesis is not too far-fetched. Unfortunately, the well-known YouTuber wraps the statement with a slightly conspiratorial undertone and ignores the good arguments.
