Maintaining weight after dieting: changing lifestyle
Many go through the same cycle of dieting and then gaining weight over and over again. The solution is: don’t go on a diet, change your lifestyle.
- As great as the temptation may be to lose the promised 10, 15, or 20 kilos within a few weeks through an extreme calorie deficit: resist these crash diets!
- A change in your lifestyle may bring results more slowly, but they are sustainable.
- Because if you limit yourself severely for just a few weeks and then return to your normal eating habits – the very ones that caused the weight gain – the unwanted weight will quickly be back.
- So make changes in your life that are healthy in the long term, both in terms of diet and exercise.
Instead of a diet: permanently correct nutrition
You can’t stay on a diet forever. Here are some tips that will help you control your weight in the long term.
- Stick to the new eating habits instead of falling straight back into the ice cream, fries, and pizza trap.
- Learn when you are really hungry and when you just want to eat out of boredom or cravings – this also applies to your portion sizes.
- Also, focus on a wholesome diet. Focus on nutritious, fresh ingredients instead of replacing all meals with protein shakes or weight loss bars.
- Get enough vitamins and minerals. A healthy diet includes plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, fats in the form of nuts or seeds, proteins, and carbohydrates. When your body is nourished, you will experience fewer cravings for junk food.
- Choose a diet that works for you. Hate salads? Then don’t force yourself to eat them every night. Instead, simply blend the spinach into a delicious smoothie. The number one way to control weight is to eat a diet that you find delicious and can maintain over the long term.
- But treat yourself, too: if you keep denying yourself your favorite foods, you’ll never be satisfied.
Move your body
Regular exercise is essential for a healthy body and to maintain weight.
- Exercising increases your metabolism, making it easier to control weight. It can also help regulate appetite and build muscle. So, in order to maintain your weight after a diet, you should definitely lead an active lifestyle.
- Change small things in your everyday life to move more. Walk to the supermarket instead of taking the car. Ride your bike instead of the bus.
- Find a sport that you enjoy. This will make it a lot easier for you to pull yourself together than lugging yourself to the gym, when in fact you really don’t like it. Yoga, kickboxing, pole dancing… There is sure to be something for you.
- It doesn’t have to be a marathon. Get 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day — including basic walking — instead of working yourself to the point of exhaustion for three hours once a week.
