Itching, redness, dandruff: a dry scalp is a real nuisance. But what is behind the problem of dehydrated skin and what needs to be considered when caring for it? We reveal everything you need to know!
Too much friction or sun? The reasons
A dry scalp is characterized by disturbed or insufficient moisture production. In fact, your scalp has a particularly large number of sebaceous and sweat glands. These normally release a secretion that forms the so-called protective acid mantle that keeps skin and hair supple.
If there is no secretion, this protective barrier becomes porous. The result: the tissue loses moisture more easily and becomes more sensitive. Irritations such as dandruff, redness and itching are the result. In the worst case, your hair will also suffer from this phenomenon, which will now become drier and more brittle – potentially leading to hair loss.
But what is behind the problem of dry tissue? Unfortunately, there are a number of possible causes. They range from excessive mechanical friction (e.g. from hats or brushes with plastic bristles) to UV radiation to dry heating air or hormonal fluctuations.
How to take care of dry scalp
Make sure you use mild hair care products that are specially tailored to the needs of dry and sensitive scalps. These shampoos and conditioners work particularly gently and gently and fill up the skin’s moisture storage. Immediate relief is guaranteed here.
When washing your hair, the following also applies: a maximum of two to three times a week and only with lukewarm water. Hot and excessive washing also dries out the skin and hair.
Our extra tip: A popular home remedy for a dry scalp is high-quality natural oils such as argan or coconut oil. To treat, massage a few drops directly into the scalp once or twice a week. Leave it on for an hour, wash it off, done.
