Icicles or icicles are a white and elongated variety of radishes (English white radishes, French blanche transparente, Italian ravanelli bianco, Spanish rabanito blanco), which grows between 10 and 15 cm long. They may look like young radishes, but they taste like radishes. They are significantly milder and not as hot as some radish varieties.

Origin

Icicles/radishes are probably native to East Asia and have been cultivated as ornamental plants in China and Japan since ancient times. They may also come from the wild herb Raphanus landra, which is widespread in the Mediterranean region. In any case, they were not known in Central Europe until the 14th century at the earliest and are now cultivated worldwide.

Season

You can get icicles regionally from the beginning of May/June to mid-July in stores.

Taste

Icicles are very juicy and taste like radishes.

Use

You can leave icicles in one piece after peeling and nibble as raw food, or cut into cubes, slices, or sticks and use in fresh salads. Icicles can also be used to decorate cold cuts or cheese platters.

Storage/shelf life

Icicles are best consumed as fresh as possible. Wrapped icicles can be kept fresh in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator for about three to four days. Icicles are not suitable for freezing.
