Indian lentil soup with a twist

Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 1 large onion(s)
  • 6 garlic cloves
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil, neutral
  • 300 g lentils, red
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 ½ liters of water, hot
  • 2 tsp sweet paprika powder
  • 1 tsp cumin, ground or crushed in a mortar
  • 2 tsp garam masala
  • 1 pinch of cardamom powder
  • 1 pinch(s) cinnamon powder
  • ½ lemon(s)
  • 100 ml cream
  • 2 tsp salt
  • pepper
  • 1 chili pepper(s), red
  • Coriander or chives

Instructions

Working time approx. 10 minutes; Cooking/baking time approx. 20 minutes; Total time approx. 30 minutes

Slightly spicy, with aromatic spices

Peel and dice the onions and garlic. Heat the oil in a saucepan. Sauté the onions and garlic while stirring. Add the lentils and tomato paste, stir, and immediately pour in the hot water. Add the paprika, cumin, garam masala, cardamom powder, and cinnamon powder. Simmer the soup gently for about 20 minutes, until the lentils are tender. Add the lemon juice and cream. Season to taste with salt and pepper. If desired, garnish with chili, coriander, or chives.
