This all-time, quick dish for Indonesians who don’t like to cook is available in every warung and in takeaway bags called “Nasi Bungkus.”
Boil the washed rice in water for 12 minutes, then let it soak for 30 minutes without applying heat. Meanwhile, wash the mung bean sprouts, shake dry, and use fresh. Hard-boil the egg, peel it, and halve it lengthwise. Wash one cucumber and cut it into approximately 6 mm cubes. Wash the tomatoes, remove the stems, halve them lengthwise, and remove the green core. Halve the halves lengthwise and crosswise. Remove two lettuce leaves, wash them, and shred them into bite-sized pieces. Cut the tofu into approximately 2 cm cubes and fry in the sunflower oil until light brown. For the peanut sauce, wash the chili pepper, cut it crosswise into thin slices, leaving the seeds on, and discarding the stem. Mix with the remaining ingredients and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Divide the cooked rice among the serving plates. Arrange the tofu, cucumbers, tomatoes, and one egg half each on top. Then add the mung bean sprouts and the lettuce leaf. Pour the sauce over the rice, then add the crab bread and serve. Note: Nasi is boiled rice and campur is a mix. A warung is a simple snack bar, sometimes with seating and a watering hole for washing hands. Nasi campur is a finger food in Indonesia and is served on paper. A spoon is provided upon request. The picture shows a restaurant version. It generally comes with one or two tablespoons of a spicy sambal (sambal ulek). This dish is great for parties because you can prepare all the ingredients ahead of time and everyone can help themselves to what they like.
