Hot Dogs With A Difference

Hot dogs come in many varieties. What almost all hot dogs have in common is the sausage and bun as the main ingredients. With the other ingredients and sauces, however, there are many interesting variations.

Hot Dog Variations

In Germany, Frankfurter or Wiener sausages usually go into the hot dog bun. The Danish hot dog with the bright red colored sausages, the Pølser, is particularly famous. Fried onions, chopped onions, Danish pickles, ketchup, mustard, and of course Danish remoulade belong to a stylish Danish hot dog.

In Austria, on the other hand, a hole is drilled into a stick baguette, into which the sausage is then inserted. Usually, only ketchup and mustard are added, onions or cucumbers are completely missing here.

In the US, hot dog sausage comes from the grill. Incidentally, ketchup is rarely seen at the snack bar here. Typical for the hot dog in the USA are mild mustard and spice sauces (relish) in different flavors. There are also many regional hot dog variations in the USA, e.g. B. with cheese, jalapeños, chili con carne, or even with sauerkraut.

Hot Dog Variation – Sausage

The sausage is the heart of the hot dog. A delicious alternative to cooked Wiener sausages is a bratwurst from the pan or from the grill. As a meatless sausage substitute, you can use mozzarella sticks in addition to tofu sausages. Another popular vegan variant is the carrot hot dog, in which the sausage is replaced with heated carrots.

Hot Dog Variation – Bun

The bun is the backbone of the hot dog. It holds the ingredients together and shapes the bite. A rustic baguette offers a change from the usual soft hot dog buns. This goes particularly well with grilled sausage and fresh onions. Onion baguettes, grain, or poppy seed rolls can also spice up the hot dog taste experience.

A hearty hot dog variation that is guaranteed to fill you up: A wholemeal roll with grilled or fried sausage, lettuce, red onions, pickled cucumbers, and optional bacon.

Hot Dog Variation – Sauces, Salads & Co

Onions, cucumbers, ketchup, mustard, and remoulade are the standard ingredients of a hot dog in this country. In principle, you don’t do anything wrong with this. But if you are looking for a little variety, the door and gate are open to you. Whether jalapeños, cheddar, processed cheese, sauerkraut, various sauces, or salads – there are hardly any limits to creativity when it comes to hot dogs. Anything that pleases is allowed.

Plenty of fresh cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, and carrot salad with a light poultry sausage and some mayo and ketchup make a delicious and light hot dog variant.
