Ħobż Toast: Tiekol Toast Sħiħ Huwa Hekk B'saħħtu

Since whole grain products are considered healthy, one might assume that whole grain toast is a good alternative to traditional toast. In this article you will find out whether this is really the case and which baked goods are better suited for a healthy diet.

Wholegrain toast is that healthy compared to other toast bread

Toast bread is mostly toasted or popular as a sandwich. However, it is not exactly considered a healthy and wholesome food. Some people therefore reach for whole grain toast. We will explain to you whether this is really a healthier alternative.

  • Toast bread contains significantly more sugar and fat than other types of bread. Up to 5% fat and 4% are contained in a toast. Wholemeal toast also contains sugar and fat, but in slightly lower amounts.
  • The white flour used in traditional toast bread has little nutritional value and provides little fiber to the body. Wholemeal toast contains more fiber than buttered toast, but it cannot compete with wholemeal bread by far.
  • Toast bread and wholemeal toast contain many other additives in addition to flour, salt, water, yeast and fat. These include, for example, emulsifiers, stabilizers and preservatives.

Wholemeal bread – The healthy alternative to wholemeal toast

Compared to conventional toast, whole grain toast is actually a slightly healthier alternative. However, since it still contains a lot of fat, sugar and additives, it should only be consumed in moderation. We explain why whole grain bread is healthier than whole grain toast.

  • Although whole grain bread contains more fiber than toast bread, it falls far short of whole grain bread. Because whole grain toast contains only about a quarter of the amount of fiber compared to whole grain bread. Wholemeal bread also contains significantly less sugar and fat.
  • The many additives also speak against toast. However, these are often also found in other packaged breads. A good alternative is freshly baked bread from an organic bakery or from your own oven.
  • Last but not least, the toasting itself should be viewed critically. The roasting process can lead to the formation of acrylamide. This substance is suspected of being carcinogenic. If at all, toast should only be lightly browned and never dark toasted.
