Onion Taste in the Mouth: How to Get Rid of It

A taste of onions in the mouth may not only upset the stomach but also the tongue. Especially when you eat fresh onions, the taste can linger for a long time. However, the taste can be eliminated with a few home remedies.

Combat onion taste in mouth

In addition to cleaning your teeth, which should of course come first, the onion taste can also be brought under control with some foods.

  • Banish the onion taste with a thorough teeth cleaning. Use a toothpaste that has an antibacterial effect. If the pack says it freshens your breath, you’re making a good choice.
  • It is worth cleaning the spaces between your teeth with dental floss beforehand. Use dental floss with menthol or another flavor. Onion skins may have gotten caught between the teeth, continuously providing the onion flavor.
  • While brushing your teeth, you should also clean your palate, cheeks, and tongue after eating onions. Use the toothbrush for the palate and cheeks and a tongue cleaner for the tongue. Use it as described in the package leaflet.
  • Finally, rinse your mouth with mouthwash. It also reaches areas that your toothbrush cannot. A stubborn onion taste is a great way to get rid of an essential oil conditioner. If necessary, repeat the rinse.

Other home remedies in addition to teeth cleaning

In addition to cleaning your teeth, there are other home remedies that you can use to get rid of the onion taste.

  • Use dairy products. A glass of pure milk or natural yoghurt or pure quark can also counteract the taste of onions. Take a sip or a tablespoonful in your mouth and hold it there for a while before swallowing. The lactic acid bacteria can bind the taste.
  • You can also use buttermilk for this. Adding herbs such as chopped parsley or chives will increase the flavor-binding effect.
  • Of course you can also use the parsley to chew on it. This is especially useful if you don’t like raw dairy products. When chewed, the fresh parsley releases essential oils that soften the onion flavor.
  • If you like and tolerate it, you can also use fresh ginger. Leave a few pieces of ginger in 250 ml of hot water for 30 minutes and then drink the lukewarm tea. You can also candy and chew the ginger pieces. This all causes the onion flavor to disappear.
  • Alternatively, you can put 2 to 3 coffee beans in your mouth and chew on them. The coffee taste neutralizes the onion taste.
  • And if none of these home remedies are available or don’t suit your taste, just buy some herbal sweets and suck them. They may not be tooth-friendly, but they do the job for now.
