Make grenadine yourself: That’s what the term means
Grenadine is often used in cocktails in particular – but many do not know exactly what the term means.
- Grenadine is a fruit syrup with sugar content.
- Traditionally, it is made from pomegranates. Nowadays, various other red fruits such as currants, raspberries or blackberries are also mixed into the syrup to supplement it.
- The syrup is alcohol-free and is therefore often used in non-alcoholic cocktails.
- Its striking red color is particularly striking.

Pomegranate syrup can be used not only in cocktails, but also in cooking. Tip: If you don’t have grenadine syrup at home, you can alternatively use another fruit juice made from cranberries or blackcurrants.
- Grenadine spices up salad dressings and gives them a fruity note. For example, make a dressing with grenadine, tahini, lime juice, and salt and pepper.
- There is a wide range of cocktail recipes with grenadine. For example, try a Bahamas, for which you need ice cubes, grenadine, apple juice and lime juice.
- Simply sweeten plain yogurt with a few dashes of grenadine syrup to make it tastier.
- The syrup is also suitable for hearty dishes. For example, use grenadine to make a sauce that you serve with beef fillet.
Step by step: How to make grenadine syrup yourself
You can easily make the delicious, sweet syrup yourself from just a few ingredients. You need for a small bottle (about 300 ml): 3 pomegranates, 250 g sugar and 1 lime.
- First you need the seeds of the pomegranates. You have to separate them from the pulp. There are several methods for doing this ; You can knock out the seeds with a wooden spoon, for example.
- Then put the pomegranate seeds in a saucepan.
- Squeeze the lime with a suitable press. Put the juice in the pot as well.
- Then add the sugar to the seeds and the lime juice. Let the mixture simmer on low for about 20 minutes.
- Now use a sieve and pour in the contents of the pot. Stroke the pomegranate seeds with a wooden spoon and collect the juice in a bowl.
- Finally, fill the collected pomegranate juice into a glass bottle and seal it. Be sure to fill in the juice while it is hot.
