How to Eat Rice with Chopsticks

Spread the love

When rice is served in small rice bowls, the bowl can be raised to the mouth with the free hand, and then the chopsticks are used to scoop the rice directly into the mouth. But you should also practice eating rice dishes from a flat plate.

Eating with chopsticks – The basics

Before you look at the following photos, take a ballpoint pen as usual – i.e. between your index finger and thumb and move the pen on a piece of paper from top right to bottom left and back by just moving your fingers. Draw several strokes from top to bottom and back.

Now take a bamboo chopstick as the ribbed surface is ideal for practice. Clamp the bamboo stick loosely as shown in the picture with the pointed end pointing away from you so that the stick can no longer be moved but the thumb and forefinger are still fully mobile. That’s exactly how it should be: one chopstick remains stable in the hand, the other should be moved.

Do you still remember the exercise with the ballpoint pen? Now grasp the second chopstick like a pen!

Now move the “ballpoint” stick towards the stable stick and back, almost as if you were drawing on a piece of paper:

If you can get the ends of the chopsticks touching each other several times without crossing them, then you’re practically ready to practice with food. Again to emphasize: only the chopstick between thumb and forefinger moves!

The position shown in the last picture is the most comfortable and therefore the basic posture. If you now want to eat a large bite of meat, then go into the more parallel posture from the second picture and then pinch a piece of meat in order to then lead it slightly pinched to your mouth. Never use the chopsticks to impale food!

Soft foods are best at the beginning, hard vegetables should be practiced later. At the very end you can also practice with individual peas and peanuts. Also switch from the bamboo chopsticks to plastic versions, which are a little more slippery.

Table manners with chopsticks

Don’t poke around in food with chopsticks to pick out the best bits. When eating in company, you use your own chopsticks to help yourself from the different dishes offered from above in the middle. Very rarely, separate chopsticks or spoons are handed out, with which one can first scoop into one’s own plate. If a host wants to give you a particularly good piece of meat, they will put it on the plate – no food is passed from chopstick to chopstick! Eat the piece given to you as a token of friendship. If you don’t like the food, leave it on the plate. Also say when you are full, because the amount of food is always too generous!

Don’t play with the chopsticks. Do not point at people with your chopsticks or index finger. Also, do not bang bowls with chopsticks, as this is a beggar tradition.

Never put your chopsticks vertically in the rice bowl and then leave them in the rice: this has the same effect as the incense sticks that are burned at funeral ceremonies! When taking a break or having finished eating, place your chopsticks with the side that was in your hand on the table and the ends that touched your mouth on the bone plate or any countertop that may have been provided (such as right in the picture). The chopsticks should point away from you and never cross each other. Never put all the chopsticks on a plate – not even at the end of the meal!
