Home remedies for a smelly dishwasher

You can try these tips if your dishwasher stinks. But be careful: Don’t try everything at once – vinegar and baking soda don’t mix!

• Peel a lemon and rub the inside of your dishwasher with the peel. Halve the lemon and squeeze one half on the floor and place the other half in the cutlery basket. After a normal run, your dishwasher should smell fresh again.
• Fill a cup with vinegar and simply pour it straight through your dishwasher and run. This neutralizes odors and loosens any deposits.
• Spread baking soda over the bottom of your dishwasher. Just leave it there and when you get a chance just start the next rinse cycle.
• Put some washing-up liquid on a sponge and use it to clean the seals of your dishwasher. Follow up with lukewarm water afterward.

Prevent annoying smell

• Take out the cutlery basket about every three weeks, wash it, and also clean the sieve or the drain of your dishwasher.
• Run your dishwasher hot. The heat kills many bacteria.
• Remove coarse leftovers from your plates and cutlery. This prevents the sieve and pipes from clogging.
