You need the following ingredients to make lemon peel yourself:

  • You will need two unwaxed lemons. Lemon peel is made from their peel.

How to make your own lemon peel

If you proceed as follows, you can use your homemade lemon peel in the Christmas bakery.

  • Peel the lemon zest from the flesh.
  • Cut the citrus peel into medium-sized strips.
  • Place the strips in a saucepan filled with water and a pinch of salt.
  • Boil the water and simmer the lemon peels in the pot for about 10 minutes.
  • Drain the water and repeat the process twice. This will help avoid a bitter taste in the lemon peel.
  • Then drain the shells. Now weigh them and add the same amount of sugar.
  • Add some water and let the shells boil again. These should now simmer for about an hour.
  • When the shells are slightly translucent, you can remove them from the pot with a slotted spoon.
  • Drain the lemon peel and dry well, preferably on a cooling rack or wire rack.
  • After a few days and only when the shells are completely dry, you can cut them into cubes.
  • Store the dried lemon peel in a jar with a screw cap, for example, preferably in the refrigerator.
