How to cook pearl barley
Cook pearl barley as a basis for other dishes such as salads, soups, or bowls. They are enriched with a particularly large amount of protein. There are 9.7 grams of protein and just 1.4 grams of fat per 100 grams.
- If you have time, soak the pearl barley in water for several hours before cooking – overnight is ideal. This reduces the cooking time.
- If you don’t soak the pearl barley, wash the grain in a colander and toss the small grains under the water. This will prevent the pearl barley from becoming slimy.
- You can choose the selected water-barley ratio depending on the desired consistency of the pearl barley. A ratio between 1:2.5 and 1:3.5 is common.
- The cooking time is between 20 and 45 minutes. After cooking, you can let the pearl barley swell a little. This will make you even more tender.

Pearl barley is a versatile grain. The pearl barley is best known in a typical vegetable or chicken soup with chicken broth and soup vegetables such as carrots and celery.

- Pearl barley is also a hit with cold dishes. Why not try a salad dish with prawns and mango? A chutney gives the whole thing a spicy-fruity aroma.
- You can also prepare a dessert with it by cooking the pearl barley with milk, sugar, and vanilla at the end. Serve with fruit compote and either fresh fruit or cinnamon and sugar.
