Bitter Orange Marmalade: A Simple Basic Recipe

Bitter orange marmalade – a simple recipe

Our quantities are two jars of 250 g jam.

  • You will need 500 g bitter oranges, 250 g preserving sugar (2:1) and the juice of half a lemon.
  • First, peel the oranges. Remove the white skin and cut it into thin strips. This gives the jam its typically bitter taste.
  • Cut the oranges into small pieces and put them in a saucepan along with the white skin. Mix the orange pieces with the jam sugar. They have to stand like this for almost an hour so that they draw juice.
  • Then boil the mass. The jam has to cook properly for about five minutes, stirring constantly. If you don’t want the orange marmalade to be too coarse, puree it a little with a hand blender.
  • Then you can pour them into jars rinsed with hot water and seal them tightly. Turn the jam jars upside down to cool.
  • The homemade bitter orange marmalade lasts about a year.
