How to store potatoes in the cellar

This method is the most popular, especially for residents of private houses or if there is no space in the apartment. Before you put the potatoes for the winter under the ground, you need to prepare them:

  • sort out and discard damaged tubers;
  • dry in the fresh air, preferably in the sun;
  • put in wooden boxes (do not use bags – there is no air circulation);
  • Cover with burlap and leave in the cellar.

Ventilate the cellar itself, treat it with disinfectants, and clean the ventilation. Wipe down the crates with manganese solution or put sawdust in the bottom. Make sure the storage containers are dry.

  • it is always cold on the balcony in winter, the temperature is constant;

  • potatoes will be stored until mid-spring.

The third option for a shelter for vegetables is the lower compartment of the refrigerator. You can use it, but remember that this method is only suitable for storing a small number of tubers for 7-10 days.

Advantages:

  • there is a possibility to adjust the temperature and put the desired one;
  • there is no need to additionally disinfect the refrigerator;
  • quick access to vegetables.

Disadvantages:

  • The refrigerator compartment is not as roomy as a balcony or cellar;
  • plastic bags are not suitable – potatoes do not breathe, you will have to look for paper containers;
  • long storage the root crop in the refrigerator can not – the starch turns into sugar, which affects the taste and usefulness.

How to store potatoes for a long time – folk tips

  • lay the tubers with rowan leaves, mint, pine, or spruce branches;
  • put half an apple in the box to prevent the potatoes from sprouting;
  • onion husks, ashes, or chalk help regulate moisture levels and keep them within limits.
