Butternut Squash – A Variety Of Squash With A Nutty Flavor

The butternut squash belongs to the musk squash family and is shaped like a pear. The creamy flesh is slightly darker than the creamy skin.

Origin

Musk gourds originally come from Central America. The warm, humid climate is ideal for the growth of these pumpkins.

Season

The winter squash, which also includes the butternut squash, is harvested from mid-September to early October when the season begins.

Taste

The taste is nutty and slightly sweet. The consistency of this pumpkin is wonderfully creamy and soft.

Use

The butternut squash has a very small seed cavity, which significantly increases the pulp content of this species compared to other squash varieties. The use in the kitchen is very diverse, it can e.g. B. Process like the Hokkaido pumpkin in a pumpkin pan. It is well suited for baking and roasting as well as for soups and Asian dishes. For example, in our butternut squash recipe, it’s cooked in the oven (like the spaghetti squash in our ground beef recipe) and enjoyed with pistachio pesto and a feta and pomegranate topping. Storage

Pumpkins should be stored in a cool, dark and dry place, then they will keep for several months. The butternut squash has a very good shelf life. With optimal storage conditions, the harvest quality is maintained for up to six months.
