Caffe Doppio: What it is and How to Prepare It

As a coffee lover, you have probably come across the so-called Caffe Doppio on a menu. Read here step by step what exactly the Caffe Doppio is and how you can easily imitate it at home.

Caffe Doppio presented

Behind a Caffe Doppio, or more correctly Italian caffè doppio, is nothing more than a double espresso. A simple espresso is called solo in Italian. Caffe Doppio delights connoisseurs with its creamy consistency and high caffeine content. How to make the double espresso at home:

  1. If you know how espresso is made, then you can also make a cafe doppio. As with espresso, you need twice the amount of water and coffee. You can use either an espresso machine, a fully automatic coffee machine, a portafilter machine, or an espresso pot (caffettiera) for the preparation.
  2. Depending on your taste, you need 14 to 20 g of coffee for the amount of coffee. With a normal espresso, it is only half, 7 g. The coffee should be finely ground.
  3. Water march: For the perfect Caffe Doppio you need 50 to 70 ml of water. This should be heated to 90 degrees Celsius. The finished double espresso is poured into a cappuccino cup. Professionals also warm up the cup in advance so that the hot drink doesn’t cool down so quickly.
  4. The brewing time or throughput time should not exceed half a minute for the perfect result. You can also add sugar if you like. By the way: You can recognize a good Caffe Doppio by the dense layer of foam called crema.

Variations of espresso

The word espresso is derived from express trains, since coffee and steam locomotives are similar in the way steam is produced. The Caffe Doppio or the espresso itself is just one of the countless ways to prepare coffee in a typically Italian way. You can also modify your espresso like this:

  • Caffe Lungo: This is obtained if, when making a Caffe Doppio, you use the same amount of coffee for twice the amount of water, i.e. 7 g for 50 ml. In the café, too, the customer is sometimes served a Lungo instead of a Doppio.
  • Caffe Americano/Long Black: Caffe Americano is a ready-made, simple espresso, which is then diluted with 25 to 50 ml of warm water.
  • Caffe Macchiato: Not to be confused with the German latte macchiato! With a Caffe macchiato, a simple espresso is topped with milk froth. The latte, on the other hand, consists mostly of milk.
  • Caffe Marocchino: This variation is elaborate. Espresso is poured onto liquid chocolate. This is followed by a topping of milk foam and finally a fine layer of cocoa powder.
  • Caffe Freddo: Everyone who has ever felt like cooling off in summer will know this espresso. It is a simple espresso that is sweetened and served chilled on a few cubes of ice. After all, Freddo means “cold” in German.
