Candies – also called caramels – are one of the most popular confectionery products. Countless variations such as cough and peppermint candies, fruit and caramel candies are available. The variety of shapes and colors also leaves nothing to be desired.
Origin
Around the year 600 AD, sugar was first extracted from sugar cane juice in Persia. About 100 years later the first candy was made from sugar and fruit juice. The word candy has only existed since the 18th century. It comes from the French word “bon” which means “good”. The wife of the French King Henri IV discovered the little delicacies in Florence. These tasted so good that they enhanced the expression “bon” – hence the term “bon-bon”.

Sweets are available all year round with consistent quality.
Taste
Due to the extremely high sugar content, candies taste very sweet. Depending on the other ingredients, the snack also has e.g. B. a fruity, chocolaty or minty note.
Use
Sweets are popular as a small snack in between. Crushed or melted, sweets are used to refine cakes and desserts.
Storage
In order to ensure the longest possible shelf life, sweets should be stored as cool, dry and airtight as possible.
Durability
The shelf life of candies is highly dependent on the ingredients used. For example, sweets with milk content cannot be stored as long as other types. Basically, you should therefore pay attention to the best-before date.
Nutritional value/active ingredients
The main ingredient is sugar, but candies also contain glucose syrup. Depending on the other ingredients, milk, cocoa, fruit juice, nuts and small amounts of vitamins may be included. Due to the high sugar content, sweets should only be consumed in moderation.
