If your silver has tarnished, it can be cleaned with salt and aluminum foil. The two well-tried remedies help you to easily remove dark stains and discoloration from your cutlery or inherited jewelry.
Cleaning silver: This is how it works with aluminum foil and salt
Salt and aluminum foil are tried-and-true home remedies that will help you clean silver. Please note that this method is only suitable for cutlery or crockery. Jewelery decorated with precious stones should not be cleaned with them, as you could damage them.
- Line the inside of a bowl with aluminum foil. Put your silver cutlery in it, for example.
- Add one to two teaspoons of table salt to the cutlery. Pour hot water over everything so that the silver is completely covered with the water. Ventilate well, as silver, aluminum foil, and salt react chemically and create an unpleasant smell of sulfur.
- Note that you use a maximum of two teaspoons of salt for one liter of water.
- Leave the silver for a few minutes. Then take it out of the bowl. Place the silver on a clean cloth and drain.
- Then dry the silver well so that no water stains form. The metal should now be clean and free of discoloration.
