Frankincense is said not only to help with physical ailments, but also to have a positive effect on the psyche. In addition to anti-inflammatory properties, it can also reduce stress and have a relaxing effect.
Frankincense and its effect on the psyche
Frankincense has always been considered a miracle cure with which one can heal various physical ailments. It is even said to have a positive effect on the psyche.
- The psychoactive substance found in frankincense is called incensol acetate. It stimulates the TRPV3 receptor, which is found throughout the brain.
- So far, the effect of incense on the psyche has only been carried out using studies on mice.
- In these, stimulating the receptor has resulted in relaxation and reduced anxiety.
As a remedy for physical ailments
The active substances in frankincense are mainly boswellic acids and essential oils.
- A research team from the University of Jena and Louisiana State University found that boswellic acids convert an enzyme that actually promotes inflammation into an anti-inflammatory effect.
- With this knowledge, numerous diseases such as Crohn’s disease, asthma, neurodermatitis and rheumatoid arthritis could be treated.
- Essential oils are also said to have anti-inflammatory properties. They also help during the cold season and are also said to be good for aging skin, as they stimulate cell and tissue growth.
Frankincense in the form of capsules or as aromatherapy
Frankincense is obtained from the resin of the Boswellia tree. These grow in dry areas in Africa, India and the Arabian Peninsula. After harvesting, the resin is air-dried and thus made usable.
- There are several ways to use incense. In aromatherapy , a few drops of the extract are placed in hot water and inhaled. You can also simply put the drops on a cloth and smell them. Another possibility is to add it to the bath water, which even has a positive effect on the skin.
- If you don’t like the scent, you can simply mix in other oils to cover it up. Sweet almond, citrus or jojoba oil, for example, are suitable for this.
- In aromatherapy, the substances have an effect on the psyche. They can reduce anxiety and stress and at the same time have a relaxing and calming effect. They should also stimulate the body’s self-healing processes and increase concentration.
- Be careful which product you buy, however, as not all are designed for this type of use.
- Frankincense extract is also available in capsule form. Here 1 to 2 capsules 2-3 times a day are recommended. These should be taken with a glass of water before a meal.
- In Germany, these are only available as dietary supplements and should be used with the doctor’s advice, because taking them can affect the effects of other medications.
- The ingredients of the frankincense capsules are said to be anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and pain-relieving and even strengthen the immune system.
