These charming eye-catchers give every face something very special: But what are freckles, can anyone develop the golden-yellow spots and what should people with freckles pay attention to in their daily care? We clarify!

This is how freckles are formed

As soon as spring arrives, they show up on the faces of countless men and women: freckles. But what exactly are these spots? In fact, the dots are a pigment disorder. An absolutely harmless one, mind you – and one that’s genetic. This means that if you didn’t have freckles as a child, you won’t develop any more when you get older.

In fact, the dots appear in affected people at the latest at the age of five to eight years.

The cause of freckles is an overproduction of melanin. This dye, which is also responsible for the color of your eyes and hair, is produced in excess in people with this harmless genetic defect when they are exposed to the sun. This means that where the sunlight hits, excess melanin collects in the form of golden spots.

Care tips for people with freckles

The pigment disorder that leads to freckles is particularly evident in people with fair skin and blonde or red hair – types who are known to be generally sensitive to light.

So if you shine with golden dots, make sure you pay more attention to sufficient sun protection in your skin care. Every day, even when the sky is overcast. Daycare with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 20 is a must for you. On the beach or other longer stays in the blazing sun, we even recommend sun lotion, milk, or spray with at least SPF 30. In the best-case scenario, you should also wear a sun hat on such days to protect your face. In particular, people who also suffer from a sun allergy should protect their skin from the sun’s rays as well as possible.

Incidentally, all of these measures make sense to counteract premature skin aging and other damage caused by UV radiation, but they do not prevent the development of freckles.

Good to know: According to current medical knowledge, freckles cannot be permanently removed. However, they often regress later in life.
