Freezing Currants – You Have to Consider That

Freeze currants properly – that’s how it works

You can make a wide variety of dishes and juices from currants. If you freeze the berries, you can even do it all year round.

  • First, you need to remove the berries from the panicles, taking care not to crush them. So proceed carefully and slowly. A fork to peel the berries with is good to help.
  • Once the berries are isolated, they need to be washed off. To do this, take a pasta sieve and put the berries in it. Then run cold water over the berries and slowly lay them out on kitchen towels. The berries stay there until they are completely dry. Discard the berries that no longer look good.
  • You have to freeze currants in two steps, otherwise, the fruits will combine into a large lump. Place the berries one at a time on a board or plate and place them in the freezer. The berries stay there for about two hours and freeze individually.
  • If the berries are frozen, remove them from the freezer. Now they can be stuffed into one and won’t stick to each other. Seal the freezer bag airtight and only fill it to the point where you can freeze it well.
  • Note: The berries are soft after thawing and break down very quickly, so you should make juices or jam out of them. The berries are then no longer suitable for a cake on which they should be firm and hard.
