Quinces are rich in minerals and vitamins. Fresh quinces are hard and tasteless. They only get their typical taste of apple and lemon when they are cooked or made into jam. Before preparation, quinces must be peeled and stoned. After buying the yellow fruits, you should treat them with care, as they quickly form bruises.
Why quinces are so healthy
There are many healthy ingredients in quinces:
- Pectins: This soluble fiber can absorb large amounts of water and sugar. They can regulate blood sugar levels and promote digestion. Quinces are used as a home remedy for gastrointestinal infections.
- Potassium: The electrolyte is important for the functioning of nerves and muscles. It also regulates the water balance. Therefore, quince can relieve bladder and kidney problems.
- Folic acid: The vitamin is essential for cell division and blood formation. Sufficient intake is particularly important during pregnancy.
- Vitamin C: The high content – three times as much as in lemons – is usually lost when heated.
- Zinc: The trace element is important for hair, nails, and the immune system.
Do not eat quince raw
Quinces grow on trees, belong to the pome fruit family, and are in season from September to November. They have smooth, yellow skin covered with down and are shaped like apples or pears, depending on the variety. Apple quinces have a slightly tart taste than pear quinces, both are very aromatic. Quinces cannot be eaten raw because both the skin and the flesh are rock-hard and the skin is bitter. They must therefore first be freed from the core, peeled, and boiled down, depending on the recipe.
Prepare quinces
Quinces are particularly suitable for making jam and jelly. You can also use it to cook savory or sweet compote or stew the fruit. So that quinces do not turn brown during processing, they should be sprinkled with a little lemon juice.
Save and freeze quinces
Fruit that is not yet fully ripe can be stored separately from other fruit for up to two months. The best place for this is cool, dry, and airy. Ripe fruit is best stored in the refrigerator. You can also freeze quinces. Before that, they have to be peeled, cored, and blanched.
